The Nurses Pub provides support for underserved nursing students through recognition and scholarships. Mona Clayton, executive director and founder, was thrilled to use a one by one grant to purchase promotional branding products, including custom tote bags and crystal awards, to acknowledge winners at the organization’s third-annual gala. One recipient had a particularly inspiring story. Woman holding a crystal award.

“One of our students who received a scholarship attended the event even though her home had just burned down,” Clayton said. “She came in her slippers because those were the only shoes that survived the fire. She is married with four children and is not letting the fire stop her from pursuing her nursing career.”

Promotional branding products elevate nonprofit missions

In addition to the scholarship winners, annual Excellence in Education and Trail Blazer award winners were named by The Nurses Pub at the gala. Along with coordinating and fostering mentorships, the nonprofit also highlights success stories of outstanding professors and professionals in healthcare as a way to inspire students. And Los Angeles area high school students who want to learn more about STEM careers can participate in The Nurses Pub Club After School Program. The group hosts workshops, seminars and training, including basic skills, like how to perform CPR.

“We like to say we’re providing ‘cultural capital’ to help students in underserved communities understand all the options available to them,” Clayton said. “We then show them the way and support them along the journey.”

Clayton faced her own challenges becoming a nurse as a single parent and wanted to help others be successful as well. She published a couple of books and held workshops, but realized she could help even more students by creating The Nurses Pub in 2018. Now she’s on a mission to help nursing students in the United States, Africa, and the Philippines.

Founder uses her experience to help others

The next goal for The Nurses Pub is to build a physical resource and education center in the Los Angeles area to provide a “safe haven,” as Clayton calls it, for nursing students. Not only would the building have a dedicated space for learning and career guidance, but it would also offer support that most nursing programs don’t, such as childcare, tutors for children, transportation, and more.

“I know from my experience that especially single parents need to know that their children are doing well in school and can participate in activities,” Clayton said. “By providing this level of support, our nursing students can focus on their own education and experiences.”

A note from Cheryl

It’s moving to see organizations like The Nurses Pub encouraging more young people to go into the field and supporting them until they graduate. We’re glad to know that promotional branding products, like awards, are helping promote that mission. If you’re interested in a one by one grant, visit onebyone.4imprint.com.
