Unique event giveaways create more meaning

Youth Summit for Mother Earth brings together young people from across Ontario. The weeklong event provides nature-based experiences and leadership opportunities with a goal to grow and inspire the next generation of nature leaders.

This year’s Summit, held in partnership with Plenty Canada, the Indigenous Environmental Institute at Trent University, and Walpole Island Land Trust, was extra special because it was the first fully in-person, cross-cultural Summit. To commemorate the event, each participant was given a specially designed notepad and drawstring bag. A design incorporating tobacco, or “semah,” one of the four sacred medicines in Anishinaabe/Ojibwe Indigenous cultures, made the notepads one of a kind.

“Featuring a logo designed for the Summit by youth, the design on the bags represents the Summit’s goal of bringing together Indigenous and non-Indigenous youth to engage in cross-cultural learning,” said Maya Davidson, education coordinator. “The youth participants are really proud to display it and they get to take it home after the Summit. It helps create a sense of community among them.”
