one by one®: Liberty Place
Liberty Place is a sanctuary of hope and healing for brain injury survivors. Unlike many traditional assisted living facilities, its mission transcends care for basic needs. It aims to rebuild lives challenged by memory issues, social impairment and other unique challenges faced by brain injury survivors. Thoughtful donor thank-you gifts give back to people who help make Liberty Place possible.
A haven of healing
John is a young adult whose life was dramatically changed after a brain injury sustained in a car accident. As he coped with a society that did not understand the behavior that resulted from his brain injury, John found a home at Liberty Place.
The team’s goal for residents—ranging in age from early 20s to 70s—is achieving the highest possible level of independence. This requires focusing on individual challenges and learning how to work with or overcome them. For some people, moving forward is learning how to keep their daily space clean. For others, it may be understanding how to budget time and money.
Guided by the Liberty Place team, John started his recovery journey and was determined to make progress, one step at a time. Despite social, emotional, physical and mental challenges, John pushed through to earn a certified nursing assistant (CNA) license, re-enter the community and land a full-time job as a CNA.
Sowing seeds of remembrance using donor thank-you gifts
Liberty Place doesn’t just help survivors—it also spreads awareness. A big challenge for people who have brain injuries is that others might not understand their struggles or how life is different for them.
“The first time we got the one by one grant, we used it to purchase forget-me-not seeds, which ties into memory issues from brain injury. We sent the seeds as donor thank-you gifts, along with a little note that reminded people to remember brain injury survivors,” said Kara Osborne, a certified brain injury specialist at Liberty Place.
“We used our most recent one by one grant to order zip portion control lunch sets. There was a fundraising walk to raise awareness about brain injury, and we gave the lunch sets to people who donated to us during the walk,” Osborne continued.
