one by one®: Cancer Support Community Central Ohio
This summer, Cancer Support Community Central Ohio will celebrate 20 years of making a difference in the lives of people impacted by cancer. Based in Columbus, Ohio, the nonprofit provides support for people with cancer, their families and their caregivers, regardless of diagnosis or stage. And every bit of it is free.
Ranging from counseling and support groups to health and wellness activities and more, it provides a wide array of services. As the operation has grown, it has added activities far beyond what might be expected, like cooking classes run by a professional chef and dietician, weekend hiking adventures, music therapy and animal therapy. It also provides virtual options for many activities as well as Spanish-language counseling services to open even more opportunities for Ohioans.
There’s power in community
Melissa Lisk, senior marketing manager, said one of the common bits of feedback employees and volunteers hear from patients and their loved ones is they enjoy the sense of community. “All of these services are backed by research and run by professionals,” said Lisk. “But we’re not located in a hospital, so it’s a very different environment. It’s a much more comfortable setting.”
Promotional tote bags and coolers help spread the word
“The need for our services is increasing, and we’re finding we really need to up our branding and get our name out there so people are aware of what we offer,” said Lisk. To help bring awareness, the organization used a one by one grant to purchase tote bags and backpack coolers. The products will be split among employees and volunteers and given away at different outreach events including an upcoming 20th anniversary party. Moving forward, the items will help get the Cancer Support Community logo in front of as many people as possible.
“In the world of nonprofits where budgets are tight and the mission is life-changing, opportunities like the one by one grant are a huge plus,” Lisk mentioned. “This kind of thing is very, very important. Every penny is accounted for before the year even starts, so anytime something like this comes along, we try to take advantage. It’s essential,” said Lisk.
