one by one®: Hydrocephalus Canada

Hydrocephalus Canada is a Toronto-based organization in its 50th year supporting Canadians with spina bifida and/or hydrocephalus. Spina bifida is a birth defect in which part of the spine doesn’t form properly, leaving spinal nerves exposed. Hydrocephalus is a neurological disorder caused by buildup of fluid in cavities deep within the brain, causing harmful pressure on the brain’s tissues.

The organization offers programs and services to people—including families, caregivers and beyond—impacted by these conditions. It also works to educate the public, spread awareness, provide scholarships and much more. Established in 1971, it became a national charity in 2017.

Earlier this year, Hydrocephalus Canada teamed up with Dystonia Canada to put on the first-ever Celebrate Live Dream Walk in Toronto’s Downsview Park. The event featured a 2K and 5K walk, wheel or run to raise money and celebrate 50 years of support and resources for the hydrocephalus and spina bifida communities.

The two like-minded organizations partnered up so both could increase reach and combine resources. About 200 people participated in the event that built on what had been a similar event already established by the Dystonia Medical Research Foundation.

“The benefit of the partnership was the ability to double the awareness,” said Tanja Bessey, communications and engagement manager. “It worked really well and flowed really well.”

Promo items for events add excitement

Hydrocephalus Canada used a one by one grant to purchase clappers and temporary tattoos for the event. The clappers were given to supporters to cheer on participants, and the tattoos were part of a face-painting booth.

The items added fun to the experience and increased engagement for everyone involved. “The engagement is so important because it helps spread awareness, which is something we’re working on,” she said. “We’re trying to let Canada and the world know what hydrocephalus is because it’s so unknown. It’s not a common illness, where everyone has someone in their life that has gone through something. It’s not an issue that’s well known.”

A note from Cheryl

Hydrocephalus Canada has an important mission to support people impacted by a little-known but very serious medical condition. It’s always an honour when promo items for events can add excitement, and the inaugural Celebrate Live Dream Walk is no different.
