one by one® story: Hospice of the Highland Rim Foundation
From young children to amputees to older adults, hospice nurses and social workers see firsthand the patient and family needs outside of hospice care. Whether it’s help buying food or paying the electric bill, hospice workers can contact Hospice of the Highland Rim Foundation to help meet patient needs. As part of an annual fundraiser, the organization uses giveaways for runners to help keep the organization top of mind so it can continue to best serve hospice patients and their families.
Meeting practical needs, immediately
The two biggest needs met by Hospice of the Highland Rim Foundation are food and utilities. With a standardized system that lets them move quickly, staff can automatically give someone in need money for food and utility bills. Last year, it gave almost $74,000 to help 151 patients.
Serving seven counties in middle Tennessee, Hospice of the Highland Rim Foundation helps provide for miscellaneous needs too—for instance, by installing gravel driveways so hospice nurses can more easily access rural patients’ homes. It also purchased room air conditioners for many patients who were unable to afford them. And the organization arranged a family portrait for a 7-year-old hospice patient and his family.
How giveaways for runners play a small part
Every October, Hospice of the Highland Rim Foundation holds a major fundraiser: a 5K called the “5K Turkey Trot and a One Mile Fun Run.” Participants receive a medal, T-shirt and a runners’ bag filled with goodies. Staff always want to make sure the runners’ bags are stocked with items participants will love and use.
Thanks to a 4imprint one by one® grant, Hospice of the Highland Rim Foundation was able to order branded hot/cold packs to include in the bags. Every person who registers receives one.
“We figured a runner could use the hot/cold packs for tired muscles after walking and running. I know the runners will appreciate it and they can use the packs right after the race or any time. They’ll be able to see our logo and remember us and what we do,” said Pat Howard, administrator.
