Every day, charitable organizations across the country make a difference. Building healthy communities, providing safer living conditions, caring for pets in need and furthering gender equity are just a few causes they support. Read how four extremely different missions used promotional products for nonprofit organizations to further their goals.

Putting food on the table

Meeting Essential Needs with Dignity (MEND) provides hunger relief for people in Essex County, New Jersey. Its MEND on the Move program exists to provide healthy food to children early in life. It also delivers fresh food and produce to people at places they already frequent, such as school pickup, so they don’t have to travel to a food pantry that may be out of their neighborhood.

MEND on the Move operates similar to a farmers market, where patrons can choose from fresh produce and other nutritious food. Nutritional information and recipes are also distributed. Patrons, volunteers and donors are invited to share a recipe for MEND’s new cookbook, which will be published in multiple languages to reflect the diverse communities it serves. Everyone who submits a recipe (and the story behind it) receives a promotional apron, purchased with a one by one® grant, as a token of thanks.

Giving a new ‘leash’ on life

SpokAnimal C.A.R.E. (Companion Animal Relationship Enrichment) provides a second chance at life for animals in the Spokane, Washington, area. In addition to providing care and finding fur-ever homes for homeless pets, the organization hosts vaccine and spay/neuter clinics, and it provides food and medical care if pet owners can’t afford the costs.

SpokAnimal C.A.R.E organizes an annual day-long motorcycle ride—Riding with Rover—which is one of its largest and longest-running fundraisers. The ride starts with breakfast and includes multiple stops along the way, including lunch, several fundraising activities, and a silent and live auction with dinner. SpokAnimal C.A.R.E used its one by one grant to purchase cooler backpack chairs to raffle off at the event.

Connecting women in STEM

Association for Women in Science (AWIS) is an advocate for gender equity. While its focus is on women, AWIS benefits all marginalized and underrepresented audiences in STEM (science, engineering, technology and math). Men are also welcome as members. In addition to providing advocacy, AWIS offers career development, networking opportunities, mentorship and leadership opportunities. It also provides thought leadership and research to help members stay current on relevant trends and news.

AWIS used its one by one grant to purchase promotional buttons imprinted with the message “Equity Strengthens STEM.” The buttons were sent to individual members as well as local chapters for distribution. Members wear the buttons at conferences and industry events and while advocating with legislators on Capitol Hill.

Keeping older adults safe

Community Partnership on Aging is a unique collaboration of six Ohio cities working together to support older residents. The organization provides practical support and resources to help people stay in their homes, with safety and dignity, as long as they can. Community Partnership on Aging offers community meals, food distribution, social work services and transportation. It also provides educational and enrichment programs plus a welcoming place for older adults to meet with friends, have lunch, exercise and enjoy a greater quality of life.

Every year, the cities’ fire departments come together to hold the organization’s largest fundraiser—a firefighter chili cookoff. At the event, funds are raised to purchase home safety devices for the organization’s Safe-at-Home program. A one by one grant was used to purchase reusable food bags to give as a memento of the cookoff.
