University of British Columbia’s (UBC) student-run Thunderbots robotic team flew down to Sydney, Australia, to participate in this year’s International RoboCup. After 10 years of constant improvement and modifying mechanics, electrical and software, 2019’s spectacular team experienced victory winning the 6 vs. 6 division of the small-sized league!
The objectives of the Thunderbots go beyond creating cool goal-scoring robots that win competitions—the team wants to provide an inclusive educational experience and generate community interest in robotics. UBC students build off classroom lessons, applying what they’ve learned to complex problems, and then sharing that knowledge in an amusing, engaging platform—robot soccer.
And they found help accomplishing some of these objectives in their team jerseys 4imprint was happy to make. UBC Applied Science faculty member, Mathew, explains: “Throughout the year we are involved in a variety of public events, ranging from recruiting events for the team to demonstrations and talks for high school students. This is where our jerseys come into play. In addition to the team’s banner and posters, our members wear our jerseys during these events to identify and represent the team, as well as to provide exposure for our sponsors. Some events this year included tours of our workspace for prospective university students as well as a presentation to an Air Cadet squad! Our jerseys are the most visible when we attend the RoboCup competition each year, where we are constantly mingling with other teams, spectators, and the companies that sponsor the competition.”
Congratulations, Thunderbots, on a well-earned victory!
