one by one®: Family Promise of Las Vegas
Family Promise of Las Vegas began 28 years ago as an interfaith shelter program helping the growing number of homeless families in Las Vegas. Now part of the nationwide Family Promise network, Family Promise of Las Vegas is its own nonprofit entity that helps Nevada’s Clark County families at risk of or experiencing homelessness achieve sustainable housing and independence through a compassionate, community-based response.
Family Promise of Las Vegas works hard to keep parents and children together. Because of shelter capacities, gender restrictions and other obstacles, parents often must split up or separate siblings to access services. “Our ultimate goal is to keep families intact,” said Marisa Cervantes, fund development director. “We do everything we can to be considerate of families and keep them together.”
Building a bridge to a better future
The organization’s programs include a day center, emergency shelter, family stabilization and prevention program, Bridge Housing and Just Neighbors. Just Neighbors—its newest innovation—connects volunteer community groups with families enrolled in Family Promise of Las Vegas programs and provides items including food, clothing, linens and small appliances.
Family Promise of Las Vegas doesn’t operate a physical shelter. Instead, it contracts with local motels to maintain its motel shelter program. When a family enrolls, the goal is to gain employment for the parents and find sustainable housing.
Grant provides shirts for nonprofit employees
With the help of a one by one grant, Cervantes was able to provide T-shirts and crewneck sweatshirts for the organization’s 10 employees. She said it had been years since branded apparel was purchased, and only the longest-tenured employees had any. Each employee received two T-shirts and one embroidered sweatshirt. Now they truly look like a team.
“We had been wearing business casual clothes and we [saw] other people wearing swag, representing their organizations with logos,” Cervantes said. “I really wanted to have something branded that our staff can wear comfortably and proud[ly] while we’re at work and in the field.”
A note from Cheryl
We are pleased that a one by one grant helped provide shirts for nonprofit employees and gave the Family Promise of Las Vegas team a unified look. Twenty-eight years of impact and countless lives improved is awe-inspiring. If you’re interested in a one by one grant, visit onebyone.4imprint.com.
