Find the right trade show

PinterestPinterest4imprintYouTubeFacebookTwitterLinked InGoogle+

Finding the right trade show for your business can be challenging. In the U.S. alone, there are more than 10,000 events held each year. In fact, most attendees travel more than 400 miles, giving your organization the chance to get in front of a far-reaching audience.

Whether your goal is branding, sales or even idea generation, picking the right show is crucial. This e-newsletter will offer several sources your business can use to find the perfectly matched trade show for your organization.

Choosing the right trade show

Trade shows that are a good fit with your organization should attract the right audience, be in a location you are willing and able to travel to, be timed to complement your company’s seasonality or product launches and fall within your budget. Here are some sources you may want to try in order to find the right event for your company.

  1. Trade associations or your local association of commerce: Your organization’s trade association or other relevant professional associations can be a great starting point for finding a trade show that complements your product or service. They should be able to provide you with a complete list of upcoming events, their locations and dates. If you’re looking to increase awareness of your brand and industry-specific information isn’t part of your objective, consider local trade shows. Try contacting your local association of commerce or the convention and visitors bureau for help.
  2. Try before you buy (i.e., send a scout): Before investing the time, effort and money needed to participate in a trade show, you may want to send a scout to attend. The scout’s role will entail gathering information about the show and sharing it with the team. Determine what you’re looking to get out of a show and be sure the scout has a clear understanding of those expectations. For example, what, if any, networking opportunities exist? Or, is there new technology that’s a must-see for your organization?
  3. Ask around: Sometimes there’s no better referral than word of mouth. If you meet an exhibitor that does similar work or a customer who’s versed in the industry, spark up a conversation and ask what other shows they exhibit at or attend. There’s nothing wrong with letting others know you’re looking to increase your visibility. Who knows—they may provide you with the basis for your next big lead. Be sure to share business cards and send a note of thanks for taking the time to help. Include a logo’d stylus or phone holder to show gratitude. Or, ask an employee to conduct competitive intelligence to determine the top 10 trade shows in your industry. Request the attendee lists for each and scan them for top competitors. If your competition is there, you may want to be, too.
  4. Check online resources: There is an array of online tools to help you find the trade show that’s right for you. The Trade Show News Network (TSNN) publishes an annual list of the Top 250 US Trade Shows and the Top 50 Canadian Trade Shows. These helpful lists rank some of the largest shows in the industry and provide the number of exhibitors, number of attendees, a show description and more. The ExpoDatabase is another helpful tool that allows users to search an international database of shows—search by venue, sector, keyword and more.

Remember, whether you’re looking to make your next big sale or you just want to increase awareness of your company and its brand, a trade show can help. Once you’re sure you’ve found the one that’s right for you, make a lasting impression. Thank visitors and keep them thinking of you long after the show with thoughtful giveaways. Tidy-Up Key Tags or USB car chargers will definitely come in handy.

We hope you’ve picked up a helpful tip or two on choosing a trade show that’s right for you. Just be sure to get out there—opportunity awaits!
